Don Winslow in conversation with Chris Deerin

Event Date:

Reform Scotland was delighted to host a conversation with the globally celebrated, award-winning American novelist and political activist Don Winslow.

Winslow, author of 21 novels, has been feted by fellow writers including Stephen King, James Ellroy and Ian Rankin. He recently released City on Fire, his latest best-seller and the first part of a sweeping trilogy. He has announced that these works will be his last – after three decades as a novelist, he is to focus on campaigning for progressive causes and against the potential re-election of Donald Trump as US president in 2024.

Winslow’s books have always displayed a strong social and political conscience, while being witty and thrilling page-turners. His revered Cartel series, beginning with 2005’s The Power of the Dog, shone a harsh light on America’s War on Drugs. City on Fire explores loyalty, betrayal, honour, and corruption on both sides of the law. Janet Maslin of the New York Times says that “the Winslow effect is to fuse the grave and the playful, the body blow and the joke, the nightmare and the pipe dream. It’s flippant and dead serious simultaneously.”

Don Winslow was in conversation with Chris Deerin, Director of Reform Scotland and held over Zoom on Monday 2 May. Catch up with the event below.
