Call for a Scottish Treasury – Record

Daily Record, 21.11.08

\r\n

Scotland should have a Chancellor of the Exchequer with responsibility for collecting taxes north of the Border.

\r\n

And there shoudl ne a new body to look after the interests of England, separate from the Westminster Parliament.

\r\n

The radical proposals come from Reform, an Edinburgh think tank.

\r\n

They saya Scottish Treacury would collect taxes in Scotland on behalf of Scottish and UK governments.

\r\n

Reform Scotland chairman Ben Thomson said: "The Scottish Parliament\’s almost total reliance on the block grant limits its accountability.

\r\n

"Equally, it provides no incentive for politicians in Scotland to come up with ideas to boost economic growth or improve public services.

\r\n

"However poorly the economy performs, money still rolls in via the block grant."
