Scotland could become one of the most successful countries in the world, an independent think tank revealed yesterday.

\r\n

With lower taxation, less government and tighter financial countrol, Scotls could enjoy a higher standard of living.  The newly formed think tank Reform Scotland, argues that once the right economic framework is in place, Scotladn could become an international leader.

\r\n

Firstly, however, the country would have to achieve an average growth rate of 3.5 per cent over a period of 10 to 12 years, Reform Scotland says.  Teh annual average growth rate of teh the last three  decades has been 1.8 per cent.

The report, Powers for Growth, makes four recommendations: lower overall tax burden; more limited government; greater fiscal autonomy and better statistical information.

Chairman Ben Thomson said: "Our research recognises this can\’t be realised without greater financial powers for the Scottish Parliament.  At present public spending is largely governed by a block grant from Westminster.  Raising more revenue in Scotland would also provide and incentive for greater control of public spending."
